Serbia, McCain of Europe
By James PoulosJust can’t catch a break. Get it, break? Sigh:
PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) — Montenegro’s president has indicated his tiny Balkan state will recognize Kosovo’s independence despite bitter opposition from traditional ally Serbia.
Vujanovic said Montenegro needed to make a decision on Kosovo’s status soon.
President Filip Vujanovic said Tuesday the decision will have to be made soon because of Montenegro’s desire to become an European Union and NATO member.
Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic on Monday warned Montenegro against recognizing Kosovo, which split from Serbia in February. He said it would represent "a stab in the back."
Love that catchphrase. But who cares about backstabs when the force of events drops a bomb on you? I have insisted since the runup to recognize Kosovo began that the ingestion of both it and Serbia into Europe was a necessity of intra-EU and Transatlantic relations. I also predicted that the region would not explode into chaos and debris. How worrying that this great accomplishment of Western foreign policy cannot satiate the addled appetites of those, not even content with living out their Georgian fantasies, would pull Ukraine into NATO without a second thought about the will of its own divided people.
