Microsoft takes on Apple’s ads… revisited

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Microsoft’s Jerry Seinfeld ads are dead. See ya.

That was fast.

Microsoft said that was the plan all along. Pay Seinfeld $10 million as part of a $300 million ad campaign for two weird commercials that made Microsoft seem even more out of touch. Right.

The new ads are much better. Much better.

I like them. Although after thinking about it for a few minutes I do remember seeing Deepak Chopra carrying a Mac into the green room when we were on Bill Maher a year or so ago. Then again, as he likes to say, “I am a profit. P, R, O, F, I, T. Profit.”

Appleism, revisited

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

My piece on the religion that is Appleism led a friend to send me an email about his experiences at One Infinity Loop in Cupertino, Ca (Apple’s terrestrial address):

I visit the Infinite Loop quite regularly…. I happened to be there the day that all employees were given their free iphones (the original) a few weeks after they were introduced. I was walking around with… (he was playing with his new toy the entire time) and he took me by the cafeteria to see the new shrine. Someone had decided it would be good for employee morale to have a giant iphone (about 6 feet high) displayed there, and Apple employees had responded by heaping offerings–mostly flowers and fruit–around it’s base. It was a big joke (someone had probably seen pictures from cargo cults)–but it sort of wasn’t too. After all, as idols go this was a big provider, and was making its worshippers quite wealthy.

Microsoft takes on Apple’s ads… they shouldn’t have

After two years of having their product bashed by Apple’s Mac guy, Microsoft said, “Enough!” and set out to answer them. They hired Crispin Porter + Bogusky (note the “+” - sign of hipness) to craft the ads. They enlisted Jerry Seinfeld. And THIS is the result…

$300 million, an ad agency and Jerry Seinfeld and THAT was the response to Apple? Mac guy isn’t trembling.

Who owns that ad agency? Steve Jobs? Oyyyyyyy.

Here, by the way, is the first Mac guy TV spot (I think):

And I do love this one:

And this one…
